Associate Attorney

The ideal candidate will bring Spanish language fluency and be comfortable acting on guidance. Attention to detail is key, as is the ability to prioritize effectively and adapt to the rapidly changing legal landscape. This position will also include increasing independence and responsibility over time, with commensurate pay adjustments. Optimally, the successful candidate will bring interest in a long-term relationship with OIG and our clients. New graduates with a passion for immigration law are encouraged to apply; bar exam passage is required within six months of hire. 

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Successful completion of an accredited law school and intention to become a member of a state bar.
  • Must be fluent in speaking, writing and communicating in Spanish.
  • Demonstrated ability to pay strict attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible, agile, and resilient in addressing expected and unexpected situations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, negotiation, facilitation, problem solving, decision making, and analytical skills.
  • Interpersonal and conflict resolution skills with demonstrated ability to listen to understand and manage difficult conversations.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality written attorney product, such as motions, complaints, appeals, etc.
  • Ability to maintain professional demeanor and a high level of customer service for a potentially demanding customer base in a variety of situations and with various interest groups or individuals with conflicting and competing needs, desires, and demands.
  • Commitment to the concept and practice of teamwork and cross-responsibility within the office.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience providing legal services to immigrant communities helpful but not required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 particular emphasis on Word, Excel, and Outlook and Sharepoint.
  • Knowledge of database programs helpful but not required. 
  • Effective and productive use of time management practices, prioritizing, multi-tasking, and working in a fast-paced, detail-driven, service-oriented environment.
  • Strong oral communication skills using in-person and virtual formats.
  • Interest in learning and exploring tools and technologies to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

Minimum Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability and desire to work in-office. This position is fully onsite.
  • Knowledge and commitment to seeking justice for immigrant communities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals and groups, including the use of interpreters.

Job Related Physical Characteristics:
  • Ability to communicate in person, in writing, by email, by telephone, and other communication media, e.g., video conferencing.
  • Ability to operate a computer for long periods.
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for long periods.
  • Ability to manipulate data for program and budgetary purposes and typing.
  • Ability to use standard office equipment and computer peripherals.
  • Ability to work in a moderately noisy environment.
  • Ability to work in an office with stairs.
  • Ability to maintain focus and perform detailed work requiring concentrated effort for long periods.
